Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says while the world may not be perfect, the country’s legislative system must be structured in a way where it does not abuse the rights of the youths.

He made this statement while delivering the feature address at yesterday’s opening of the National Juvenile Training Conference.

The Programme formed part of the Juvenile Justice Reform system which targets young people in the Eastern Caribbean, who have had to go through the Justice System. It is being undertaken by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS.

Prime Minister Gonsalves said while some youths may get involved in negative activities, the legislation must ensure that they are not abused when they have to go through the justice.

The Prime Minister said in St. Vincent and the Grenadines successive Governments have continued to build a program which ensures the care of children and this work is continuing.

He also called on persons involved in the Juvenile Justice Reform system to ensure that they familiarize themselves with the laws which cover this very important subject.
