Assistant Comptroller at the Customs and Excise Department, Leroy James, said the role of collecting duties and taxes is crucial to the continued economic development of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
He made the point during the Police on the Beat programme aired on NBC Radio on Monday night, which focused on the roles and functions of the Customs and Excise Department.
Mr. James said monies collected through the department are primarily uses to assist the government in fulfilling its mandate.
Mr. James said the department is also charged with the responsibility of protecting the country’s borders.
