Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has commended Local Community Groups and Organizations that have been making their contribution to improve Disaster Management in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Prime Minister said the Red Cross; NEMO’s District Disaster Committees, as well as church based and other groups which provide voluntary services in disaster management at the community level are a very important part of the national establishment.

In a Radio Address to mark the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season yesterday, the Prime Minister said the National Emergency Management Organization is continuing to implement policies and strategies to build resilience against disasters.

He said the Organization is boosting its alert capacity with the establishment of a new alert system called Common alerting Protocol.
The Prime Minister added that NEMO is in the process of updating its Response Plans.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast indicates that this year’s Hurricane Season will likely be below-normal.
It is predicting a 70 percent likelihood of six to eleven named storms, three to six hurricanes and zero to two major hurricanes.
