New Parliament Opening And Arrest Of NDP Candidate

Members of Parliament on both the Government and Opposition sides were sworn in yesterday during the Ceremonial Opening of the First Session of the Tenth Parliament at the Assembly Chamber in Kingstown.

Among the MPs taking the oath were two new Senators for the Parliamentary Opposition – Dr. Jules Ferdinand and Maria Zita Barnwell.

A new Speaker of the House Jomo Thomas and Deputy Speaker Carlos James were also sworn in yesterday.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves extended congratulations to the Parliamentarians.

Meanwhile … Newly elected Speaker Jomo Thomas said he was pleased to be appointed to such an important position.

Meanwhile … a crowd of supporters of the New Democratic Party moved from outside the House of Assembly and gathered outside the Police headquarters in Kingstown where it has been reported that NDP candidate Benjamin Exeter was detained by Police.

NBC News understands that Exeter was charged with Resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
