The Salt-Smart Coalition in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment will host a one day workshop titled “Reduce Salt For A Healthier Life” tomorrow

The workshop will be held at the Bequia Community High School, in Port Elizabeth, from 9:30 this morning, as part of the Salt Reduction Project educational drive.

A release from the Ministry of Health says there will be presentations by Dr. Twanna Browne-Caesar, Consultant Nephrologist at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, on the “Effects of Excess Salt on the Body”.

Dietitians at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital Nichole France- Nichols and Kerry Samuel, will do a presentation on “Finding Hidden Salt in Foods”, and Mrs. Cecily Haynes, Lecturer at the Division of Nursing Education of the SVG Community College, will speak on “Hypertension”.

There will also be blood pressure, weight and Body Mass Index checks for persons attending the workshop, as well as an Exhibition showcasing low salt products, as well as a counselling service.

The activity is designed to empower mothers and other extended family members to cook with and choose foods with less salt, in a bid to protect themselves and their families from developing hypertension and other non-communicable diseases.
