The Solid Waste Management Unit in the Central Water and Sewerage Authority is continuing to appeal to persons to desist from littering rivers, since this may lead to serious flooding when there is heavy rainfall. Solid Waste Manager Winsbert Quow made the appeal, in the wake of damage which was caused by flooding and landslides on Christmas Eve. Mr. Quow said if proper waste management practices are not implemented, then garbage which is dumped in the rivers and drains will impede the flow of water when there is heavy rain. He said while littering is not the only cause of flooding, it is part of a combination of factors which contribute to problem. The Map is a table-size replica of Union Island, built from cardboard outlining where Climate Change has had effects on the island. He said they have also been working with persons living on the coasts of Union to come up with solutions to climate change on the island.
