A local Farmer and Agricultural Consultant has expressed the view that the devastation created by the floods which impacted this country in December last year, was caused by excessive cutting of the forests.

Former Chief Agricultural Officer, Philmore Isaacs expressed the view, during NBC’s Views On Issues programme on Sunday, which examined the issue: Protecting Our Forests and the Environment for a Sustainable Future

Mr. Isaacs noted that the Forest provides an important layer of protection from weather events which can result in torrental rains.
And, he pointed out that the events of Decembers 24th 2013 may be repeated over and over, if the issue relating to the removal of the Forest cover is not addressed.

The other Panelists were: Winsbert Quow, Solid Waste Manager at the Central Water and Sewerage Authority, Director of Forestry, Fitzgerald Providence, and Noretta John of the Environmental Department in the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment.
