A one year UNESCO-sponsored project, which focused on the production of coconut oil here, will come to a close this week.

A release from the Ministry of Agriculture says over 30 members of the Sandy Bay Coconut Oil Producers will come together at the Sandy Bay Learning Resource Centre on Thursday, to attend a closing ceremony and to display their products.

The project was intended to educate producers on techniques and best practice for coconut oil production; to build management skills amongst the coconut oil producers; and to supply producers with basic equipment to increase production and the quality of the oil.

The Sandy Bay Coconut Oil Producers received assistance under the project, through the efforts of the Rural Transformation Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture. Members of the group received training in various aspects of marketing and business management through.

Since 2010, they have been involved in the processing of agricultural products from the coconut, using traditional methods, and they are now in the process of expanding their product line.

Thursday’s Closing Ceremony will hear addresses from the Area Representative, Montgomery Daniel, as well as representative from UNESCO and the Rural Transformation Unit in the Ministry of Agriculture.

There will also be the distribution of certificates and a quantity of equipment provided by UNESCO, for use in the production of coconut oil.The ceremony is scheduled to get underway at 10:00am
