Local Fisherfolk are seeing significant benefits from the Fish Aggregation Devices or FADS, which were deployed in the waters  of St. Vincent and the Grenadines last year, by the Fisheries Division in the Ministry of Agriculture.

That’s according to Acting Chief Fisheries Officer, Jennifer Cruickshank Howard.  She gave this assessment, following a three-day workshop which was held last week to review the impact of the devices.

Mrs. Cruickshank-Howard said the FAD’s are man-made, floating or submerged devices, which are used for attracting and facilitating fish capture.

She said they are continuing to receive positive reports which indicate that fishermen are recording significant catches in the areas where the FADs have been placed.

Mrs. Cruickshank Howard said the most successful FAD deployed so far is located three miles off the coast of the Barrouallie community.
