Fifteen young people here will be selected to take part in a one year project on the management and disposal of e-waste.

The project, funded by the Global Environment Facility/ Small Grants Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (GEF\SGP UNDP), is being implemented locally by Constructive Solutions Inc. in collaboration with stakeholders in the environment sector, the Solid Waste management Unit (SWMU) and The Youth Affairs Department.

Project Coordinator, Ashley John said that the bad disposal practices of various technological products in small island developing states (SIDS) is detrimental to the environment. He said that this project is a way for this country to implement better environmental practices that will be beneficial to the people of the nation.

The pilot project aims to develop a public awareness programme in communities and generate opportunities for sustainable livelihoods by setting up an e-waste collection facility.

The Project coordinator is appealing to the public, to no longer dump electronic waste in the soil or on the roads of this island. John says that indiscriminate disposal of e-waste exposes the population to harmful materials. He says the best way to properly dispose of e-waste is in the landfills.

The training course launched on Monday September 21st, at the Sheila McDonald Holistic Life Skills Centre, in the Baynes Brother’s Building.
