The Forestry Division in the Ministry of Agriculture will continue activities for Forestry Focus 2014 with a River Stabilization Demonstration at Colonaire today.
The Department says during the floods of December 2013, some rivers experienced major overflows that were destructive to communities, resulting in loss of farm land, agricultural produce, tree crops and livestock.
It noted that these areas remain vulnerable and are continually exposed to further damage if similar quantities of rainfall occur.
Today, Forestry Officers will journey to Mr. DaSanto’s Farm at Colonaire to conduct the river Stabilization Demonstration.
Acting Director of the Forestry Department, Fitzgerald Providence says the Forestry Officer would be using vegetative material to stabilize the river banks.
Mr. Providence explained that trees and vegetation are the most effective means of stabilizing river banks.
